Food Lion has announced that it is lowering prices at its stores in a move that it predicted would shave 25-30% off its customers grocery bills.
The Delhaize-owned US supermarket chain said that it was reducing prices on “thousands” of the items that “consumers buy most” in a bid to woo consumers who have reduced spending in response to the economic downturn.
“In today’s economic environment, we know price, more than ever, matters to our customers,” Cathy Green, president of the Food Lion family of banners, said.
Over the next several weeks, customers will see lower prices throughout the store in categories such as milk, bread, produce, meat, juice, cereal, canned goods and pet food.
The price cuts come in addition to weekly savings on promotional items with the company’s MVP loyalty card, Food Lion emphasised.
“Our actions today demonstrate our commitment to continuing to distinguish Food Lion as a low price leader in the markets we serve,” said James Egan, senior vice president of Food Lion.
