Former Wal-Mart Stores executive Trey Johnson has joined US discount retailer Family Dollar Stores in a senior grocery role.

Family Dollar said today (19 September) that it had appointed Johnson to the newly-created position of senior vice president, food.

Johnson joins from Sears Holdings, where he created what Family Dollar called a “limited assortment food concept” for the retailer’s discount department store chain K-Mart.

He joined Sears in 2009 after almost two years at Wal-Mart, where, as chief merchandising offer, he helped developed the retail giant’s Marketside format. Johnson’s career also includes time at Supervalu Inc and Albertsons.

In his role at Family Dollar, Johnson will report to executive vice president and chief merchandising officer Dorlisa Flur, who said: “Through Trey’s extensive grocery experience, leadership and strategic vision, we intend to further enhance our food business, drive trips and increase customer loyalty in an effort to grow our overall market share.”
