General Mills CEO Ken Powell is set to take on the additional role of company chairman.

Powell, who was named CEO in September, will fill both positions when Steve Sanger retires from General Mills on 23 May.

Sanger, 62, handed over the executive reins to Powell in September after 12 years as chairman and CEO.

Ray Gilmartin, chairman of General Mills’ corporate governance committee said Powell was “uniquely qualified” to lead the US food giant.

In March, General Mills booked a 43% jump in third-quarter profits. Sales were up 11.5%.
