The US Food and Drug Administration has expressed concern over the quality of Indian food imports entering the country.

“Food exports to the USA must achieve Indian safety standards first and then be inspected by the USFDA before entering the country,” said David Lennarz, vice president of the FDA Registra Corp in India, at the Federation of Indian Exports Organisation (FIEO) yesterday (23 January).

“India does not export poultry products to the US at present, but concerns over bird flu remain there as well. These give rise to questions regarding quality management of Indian food items and their safety equivalency to that of US standards.”

However, Lennarz said that as Indian products had not yet established an identity among American consumers, they had an opportunity to make an impression.
