The US food manufacturing industry, packagers and chemical suppliers may face EU-style additional controls on the chemicals they buy and use.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is preparing proposed reforms to American toxic chemicals regulations. The agency has branded the current rules an “inadequate tool for providing the protection against chemical risks that the public rightfully expects”.
In a detailed report, the EPA stressed it can currently only ask manufacturers for environmental health information about their chemicals, if they have evidence of risks.
The EPA is now pushing Congress for reforms to the US Toxic Substances Control Act ensuring:
*All chemicals be reviewed against scientific safety standards and environmental health risk criteria;
*Manufacturers collate hazard and exposure data, as with REACH safety data sheets.
