Growing demand for Greek and Mediterranean foods in the Caribbean has seen US firm Kontos Foods look to expand in the region.

The flatbread and Greek yoghurt manufacturer said it had launched a programme in conjunction with local distributors to grow its export business in Bermuda, the Bahamas, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

“In all these markets we are seeing an increase in requests from nearly all retail store chains, and restaurants, for products such as flatbreads, fillo dough, spanakopita, baklava, and gyro meats,” said Steve Kontos, vice president of Kontos Foods. “For our sales expansion effort, we are working closely with our distributors to better understand these changes in the market, develop relevant culinary ideas, and provide new marketing and point of sale material to support growth.”

Warren Stoll, marketing and business development director for Kontos Foods, added a similar effort in Canada had resulted in an 85% jump in sales for its local distributor.
