US supermarket giant Kroger has appointed of Mike Donnelly as president of its Ralphs Food Stores division.

Donnelly succeeds Dave Hirz, who is returning to the company’s warehouse chain Food 4 Less as president.

Donnelly, who is currently president of Kroger’s Fry’s division, takes up the reins at Ralph’s on 19 August. Based in LA, Ralphs operates 265 supermarkets in California. Donnelly joined Fry’s in 1978 and has spent most of his career with the company.

“Mike’s experience and leadership will benefit our associates and customers every day in every store,” said Kroger’s president and chief operating officer Don McGeorge.

Hirz has worked in the supermarket business for 36 years. Before joining Ralph’s in 2004, he led Food 4 Less, which operates 146 warehouse-style supermarkets in California, Nevada, Illinois and Indiana.
