Lifeway Foods, makers of probiotic diary drink Kefir, today (8 February) announced the completion of their headquarters expansion project.

The US firm began the US$2.5m project over a year ago and the plant will double Lifeway’s existing production capacity.

Edward Smolyansky, Lifeway’s CFO, said: “This expansion project gives us the much needed flexibility to finish moving the production of our Helios Organic Kefir line, acquired in 2006, from its current production facility in Minnesota to our main Illinois facility, where we can use our larger scale and automated production efficiencies to produce at a lower unit cost.”

In January, Lifeway announced a full-year sales increase of 40% for 2007 driven by the growth of Kefir, and a fourth-quarter sales rise of 29% for the three months to the end of December.
