Lifeway Foods, the US functional dairy firm, has certified the milk it uses comes from cows not treated with hormones.

The company, which makes probiotic dairy products known as kefir, said the change came after growing demand from consumers.

“Previously the milk we offered was hormone and antibiotic free, however, we now have a farmer’s pledge that certifies the milk is hormone free,” said CEO Julie Smolyansky.

Last month, Lifeway posted a 2% drop in first-quarter profits despite rising sales, as a 30% increase in milk prices ate into the group’s margins.

Profits fell to US$3.5m despite a 23% increase in revenues, which rose to $11.1m in the quarter to 31 March.
