Masterfoods Europe has announced the appointment of Matthias Berninger as director for corporate health and nutrition affairs, effective 5 February 2007. This newly created group will advise Mars in Europe and the CIS on public policy matters and food regulation.

Berninger, who will be based in Mars’ European headquarters in Brussels, has represented the German parliamentary group Bündnis 90/Die Grünen as a member of the Bundestag since 1994. He was parliamentary state secretary in the German federal ministry for consumer protection, food and agriculture from 2001-2005.


Alongside his engagement in reforms in food safety and storage, Berninger has been involved in policies to address obesity, and consequently in the founding of the German ‘platform for nutrition and physical activity’. Berninger has announced his retirement from duties as member of the German parliament and will join Mars in February 2007.
