Nebraska Beef Ltd has expanded its beef recall, after US Department of Agriculture investigators concluded production practices were insufficient to prevent the spread of E. coli contamination.

Nebraska Beef, which had already recalled 1.2m tonnes of contaminated primal and subprimal cuts and boxed beef, added an additional 160,000 pounds of beef to the recall, stating that it could be contaminated with salmonella.

According to the USDA, the recall is a class one recall – meaning that there is a “reasonable probability” that consumption of the beef “will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

“The products subject to the expansion may have been produced under insanitary conditions,” the USDA said in a statement.

Last month, Nebraska Beef recalled 5.3m pounds of ground beef after 40 illnesses were reported.
