US online grocer Peapod has expanded its Peapod by Stop & Shop service in Manhattan.

The Ahold-controlled grocer said yesterday (14 March) that it will offer residents and businesses in the Midtown, Upper West Side and Upper East side access to its offer.

The retailer also plans to extend its service to further Manhattan neighbourhoods by the end of the year.

“It’s no secret that grocery shopping in Manhattan is a challenge. With the high food prices, large crowds, long lines and limited retailer options, it’s a strain on shoppers’ wallets and patience,” said Andrew Parkinson, co-founder and president of Peapod. “With our low prices, thousands of weekly specials and convenient delivery options, we look forward to giving New Yorkers a smart way to save money and time.”

The move will pit it against FreshDirect, the online grocer which recently sold a stake to UK grocer Morrisons.
