US poultry group Sanderson Farms has kick-started its plans to build a processing complex in North Carolina.

The company, which last month put the project on hold, said yesterday (23 July) that an improvement in market conditions had allowed it to revisit its plans.

The budget for the site in Kinston has come down and now rests at US$121.4m, compared to an initial estimate of US$126.5m.

The Kinston facility will employ around 1,500 staff and., at full production, will be able to sell 6.7m pounds of dressed poultry meat a week.

“We are pleased that better overall market conditions, our financial performance and a strong balance sheet have put us in the position to continue to grow our company,” chairman and CEO Joe Sanderson Jr said.
