A strike among workers at Stop & Shop stores across three US states has been delayed as negotiations continue between the company and the union.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union had authorised the strike of some 40,000 workers in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island after it claimed it had seen “no progress” in negotiations over wages and employee contributions to health insurance.

However, Stop & Shop said yesterday (21 February) that the union had agreed to an extension of talks, which will continue this week.
“Unfortunately no agreement has been reached,” the company said. “We will continue to operate under the terms of the current collective bargaining agreements during the extension.”
“We are committed to continuing negotiations and working hard at the bargaining table to reach a fair agreement that provides our associates with access to quality, affordable healthcare and competitive wages and retirement benefits,” the Ahold-owned supermarket group insisted.
