A recall of US food manufacturer Sunland’s peanut butter – which is believed to be contaminated with salmonella – has expanded further.

In an announcement at the weekend, the US Food and Drug Administration said Sunland has extended its ongoing voluntary recall of peanut products to include raw and roasted shelled and in-shell peanuts processed at is plant.

Specifically, the USDA said the products included are those which are within their current shelf life or have no stated expiration date.

The original recall initiated by the company on 24 September, included peanut butter and other nut butter products produced in a separate building from where raw and roasted peanuts are processed. The recall was the result of 29 people having reported Salmonella illnesses across 18 states.

As of 5 October, the total number of confirmed illnesses reported was 35, according to the USDA.

This latest extension is the result of the continued joint investigation by the company and FDA, the administration said.

“The company has ceased the production and distribution of all products from both its peanut butter plant and its peanut processing plant while FDA and the company continue their investigation,” the USDA said.

The recall had begun with Trader Joe’s own-label peanut butter. Sunland manufactures private-label products for various US retailers including Sprout’s, Target and Fresh & Easy as well as branded nut butter.

Other recalls announced by the USDA today, linked to the salmonella outbreak, have included Purefit, Natures Recipe, Creative Energy Foods, AdvancePierre Foods, Lin-Mar Partners and S&P Co.
