Supervalu Inc chain Acme has announced that it will eliminate some 900 part-time jobs, effective 7 May.
The grocery retailer said on Thursday (28 April) that the reduction will affect its “least senior employees” who currently work 12-16 hours per week, and that they will be informed over the next “several days”.

“Last year, Acme established an aggressive plan aimed at getting our business in line with our financial realities,” said Acme president Dan Sanders. “As part of that initiative, we continue to look at the best ways to achieve success around our strategy to lower prices, improve customer service, reinvest in the business and align our workforce with today’s customer needs and economic realities. We are beginning to see positive results in some areas, but we still face significant sales challenges. Unfortunately, we have more associates than we need to serve our current level of sales, and we must take immediate action to change our business.”
The company said that the announcement “does not change” its overall commitment to the Delaware Valley.
Supervalu recorded an annual loss of US$1.5bn in the middle of April as it was hit by a series of asset impairment charges and the costs of store closures.
