Tesco, the UK’s number one retailer, has unveiled plans to open 100 Fresh & Easy outlets in four US cities by February next year.
“The Fresh & Easy concept has been specifically developed to meet the needs of US consumers,” a spokesperson for the retailer told just-food.
At around 10,000 square feet in size, the stores will be smaller than conventional US grocery stores in order, Tesco said, to make shopping quicker and easier. The outlets will be built in Los Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix and San Diego.
The chain’s product offering will emphasise fresh, healthy foods. All products stocked at Fresh & Easy will be free of transfats, artificial colours and artificial flavours Tim Mason, chief executive of Fresh & Easy, revealed at a press conference in Las Vegas. Fresh & Easy will not sell cigarettes or tobacco, but will stock beer and wine.
“We want to sell fresh, healthy foods,” Mason said. “It’s not a beer and chips business.”
