The Minnesota-based meat company Hormel Foods has announced the election of three new members to its board of directors.

Elsa A. Murano, Robert C. Nakasone and Hugh C. Smith were elected at the board meeting on 18 September. The board had been looking to replace two directors, Robert R. Waller and John W. Allen, both of whom had retired, and raise the board’s total complement from 13 to 14.

“The board is very pleased to welcome its three newest directors,” said chairman Joel W. Johnson. “The calibre of professionalism and experience in these directors will serve to further elevate Hormel Foods.”

Murano, 47, is Vice Chancellor of Agriculture, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Director of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station at Texas A&M University. She also spent three years as Undersecretary of Food Safety in the US Department of Agriculture under George W. Bush.

Nakasone, 58, a former president and CEO of toy retailer Toys “R” Us, is principal at NAK Enterprises, an equity capital, consulting and advisory company. Smith, 66, is currently a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and a consultant in the cardiovascular division at the Mayo Clinic.
