The US Department of Labor has filed a complaint against Tyson Foods that alleges the US meat giant discriminated against women when hiring workers at a plant in Illinois.

The department said yesterday (15 September) that it had made an “administrative complaint” against Tyson unit Tyson Fresh Meats.

The complaint claims that Tyson rejected female job applicants at its site in Joslin, Illinois. The department says over 750 women are owed back wages and more than 100 female job seekers should have been given the option of working for Tyson.

The department said it wants Tyson’s federal contracts to be cancelled and urged that no new contracts are awarded to the company.

“The Labor Department is firmly committed to ensuring that federal contractors give all individuals a fair and equal chance at employment,” said Patricia Shiu, director of the department’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs.
