Tyson Foods has become the latest US meat processor to streamline its business with the decision to close its site in York, Nebraska.
Some 110 jobs will be lost after Tyson decided to shut the York facility and switch production to its other meat processing plants.
“Given the dynamics of the meat business, we must continually pursue ways to operate more efficiently,” said Roy Slaughter, vice president of poultry and prepared foods operations for Tyson. “After careful consideration, we have decided it will be more efficient for another, larger operation to absorb the work done at York.”
The move comes as rising commodity costs have led to wholesale cuts in the US meat industry. Tyson has already announced plans to stop slaughtering beef at the Emporia site, which could lead to the loss of 1,800 jobs.
US poultry giant Pilgrim’s Pride is also wielding the axe. Last week, the company said it would reduce weekly chicken processing at its plants by around 5% later this year.
In March, Pilgrim’s said it would also close a chicken processing complex and six of its 13 distribution centres in the US.
