The union representing workers for US retailer Save Mart has said it has reached a tentative contract agreement over cuts being made to staff salaries and health care.
The settlement, United Food and Commercial Workers union said, protects the worker’s “security and dignity” while addressing the “competitive challenges” of the employer.
“This tentative agreement with Save Mart addresses the employer’s legitimate needs for temporary financial relief while preserving the core achievements of decades of union solidarity,” the union said. “This agreement maintains the highest wages, the finest benefits and the most generous pension plans in the grocery industry.”
The union noted it had succeeded in meeting the worker’s primary objectives, including maintaining affordable health care for members and retirees as well as securing more hours and full-time positions for members.
Gocery and department store workers in northern California have been rallying for some months in protest against cuts being made to wages and health care. A vote earlier this month had resulted in 94% of the union’s Lucky/Save Mart members voted in favour of a strike.
The union said both sides have agreed not to release the details of the tentative agreement until union members have had the opportunity to “review and ratify it”.
