Dutch food retailer Ahold has named Wal-Mart Stores executive Anthony Hucker as president of its Giant Landover division in the US. 

Hucker, who is in charge of Wal-Mart’s smaller Express stores, will join Giant Landover on 3 October. He replaces Don Sussman who served as interim president since the end of last year, following Robin Michel’s resignation. Sussman will resume his role as supply chain executive vice president supply chain for Ahold’s US operations.

Hucker has also worked for discount operator Aldi, and began his career as a food industry analyst.

Carl Schlicker, CEO of Ahold’s US operations, said: “We’re excited to welcome Anthony, who brings a wealth of retail and food industry experience to Giant.”

Ahold’s Giant Landover division operates 173 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, and employs around 22,000 people.

Last month, Ahold reported a 6.5% increase in sales for the first half of the year to US$13.4bn. Identical-store sales climbed 4.5%. Excluding fuel, identical-store sales were up 2.3%.

However, Ahold said its operating income in the US fell 1.1% to US$599m.
