Wal-Mart has begun listing the groceries it stocks online.
The world’s largest retailer does not sell groceries over the Internet in its home market. However, industry watchers have suggested that this could be the retailer’s first move towards settling up an online store.
While the listed products, which include groceries alongside health & beauty and pet supply items, are not available for home delivery they are linked to a “search in store” facility, allowing consumers to check availability.
The site also communicates nutritional information to consumers.
According to a report in The Financial Times, Ravi Jariwala of Walmart.com said the retailer’s “focus at this time is allowing customers to check availability and product details of top consumable categories sold in stores”.
Wal-Mart was unavailable for comment on its online plans when contacted by just-food.
