The world’s largest retailer Wal-Mart today (5 April) appointed Lawrence Jackson as president and chief executive officer of its global procurement division.

Jackson was previously executive vice president of the retailer’s people division, responsible for all the human resources functions of the world’s biggest private workforce. He joined Wal-Mart in 2004 from Dollar General Corp, where he was the president and chief operating officer. Jackson has also worked for Safeway and PepsiCo.

Wal-Mart’s global procurement division has purchasing offices in 28 countries. The division is also responsible for ensuring that international factories producing goods for Wal-Mart adhere to the retailer’s ethical standards and local laws.

“In this position, Lawrence will play a critical role in powering Wal-Mart’s growth and business leadership,” president and CEO Lee Scott said. “Global procurement will be key to improving the customer experience around the world through better merchandise and lower prices.”
