US yoghurt brand Chobani has secured its first listings outside the country.
The brand, owned by US dairy firm Agro Farma, has gone on sale in Australia and Canada. Seven SKUs are being sold by Woolworths Ltd, Australia’s largest retailer, in its stores in New South Wales. Canadian grocer Loblaw is selling five flavours in its outlets in and around Toronto. The listing in Australia comes five months after Agro Farma announced the acquisition of local dairy firm Bead Foods.
“Our regional launch in the Greater Toronto area and New South Wales is the first step towards making Chobani available nationwide in both Canada and Australia,” Agro Farma CEO Hamdi Ulukaya said.
Chobani is the largest Greek yoghurt brand in the US. It was launched in 2007 and gained national distribution last year. In an interview with just-food in April, Chobani’s vice president of marketing, Doron Stern, said Chobani accounted for 57% of Greek yoghurt sales in the US.
Greek yoghurt sales are growing quickly in the US. According to Euromonitor data, sales of Greek yoghurt more than doubled in 2010 to around US$920m, which meant it accounted for around 14% of total yoghurt sales.
Earlier this month, Agro Farma announced it would open its second plant in the US. It plans to invest $100m on a facility in Idaho.
