Albertson’s, Inc. (NYSE: ABS) and the American Red Cross join forces to support disaster relief efforts for those affected by the terrorist attacks. The joint effort includes an in- store fundraising program in Albertson’s and its family of stores as well as hosting blood drives in the coming weeks.

“Every American citizen has been affected by this horrendous act of terrorism,” said Larry Johnston, Albertson’s chairman of the board and chief executive officer. “By implementing these programs in our stores, Albertson’s is providing an outlet for every individual in the communities we serve to extend a helping hand. I am confident that our customers and associates will willingly and generously support this effort.”

The fundraising program, which is effective immediately, will run for a minimum of four weeks. Albertson’s customers can make donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund at the check stands in any Albertson’s, Jewel-Osco, Acme, Seessel’s by Albertson’s, Super Saver Food, Max Foods, Osco Drug, or Sav-on Drugs store. Blood drives to help meet the needs of patients throughout the country will be arranged with the American Red Cross during the next few weeks. Locations will be announced on a community by community basis.

In support of the disaster relief efforts, Albertson’s has agreed to match up to $50,000. All money collected will be donated to the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund.

“The American Red Cross is working around the clock to ensure that those affected by the tragedies of today have comfort and care,” said John Clizbe, vice president of Disaster Services for the American Red Cross. “We are grateful that so many Americans including those from corporate America have demonstrated a willingness to help the Red Cross provide immediate relief to everyone who has been touched by these catastrophic events.”

Albertson’s is hopeful that the fundraising and blood drive efforts will support the American Red Cross’ endeavors in responding to this current crisis and other disasters.
