A consumer group has called on the US dairy industry to work with congress to make sure more lower-fat milk is offered as part of the country’s school lunch program.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest has said the industry has pushed for language in the program that will result in schools offering more high-fat milk, reported the Associated Press.
Legislation to continue the program contains language that requires schools to offer milk with a “variety of fat contents”.
Margo G Wootan, the group’s nutrition policy director, said schools are likely to offer at least one kind of high-fat milk to meet the “variety” requirement.
“When they have to have a variety, it greatly increases the chances that schools will feel like they have to offer high-fat milk,” she was quoted by AP as saying.
