Computer Sciences Corporation (NYSE: CSC) and INC2inc, a neutral business-to-business (B2B) online marketplace serving the $425 billion food and beverage manufacturing industry, have expanded their relationship to build and support a collaborative commerce model that will promote shared knowledge, integrated processes and long-term relationships among INC2inc’s buyers and sellers.

CSC, a global provider of business and IT solutions and a pioneer in developing and launching online marketplaces, known as Net markets, helped INC2inc design and launch an exchange that enables real-time transactions among raw ingredient and packaging suppliers, brokers and food manufacturers. CSC will now provide strategy, architecture development and implementation to add cutting-edge collaborative supply chain planning and transportation management capabilities to INC2inc’s existing transaction capability.

Collaborative commerce represents an evolution from the linear transactions that occur in the initial stages of a Net market to a model that supports multiple transactions among multiple trading partners, and at the same time. This “many-to-many” environment relies on sharing critical information and integrating traditionally disconnected processes among organizations participating in the Net market. The addition of collaborative supply chain planning and transportation scheduling will close many gaps that exist among INC2inc’s buyers and sellers outside of the Net market and optimize interactions.

“The buyer-seller environment in the food processing industry involves relationships among a network of players, not one-time, opportunistic purchases,” said Rosie Hartman, director of Net Markets for CSC’s Consulting Group. “To successfully achieve competitive advantage, a collaborative approach must be taken to tightly link all partners in the supply chain. INC2inc, with CSC’s help, is building the platform that will allow commerce to occur on a new level.”

INC2inc’s supply chain planning capabilities will link multiple suppliers and manufacturers to forecast demand, ensure needs are met with an adequate supply, automatically replenish inventory, and arrange transportation through the Net market. While these capabilities benefit both buyers and sellers for any given transaction, the challenge in a many-to-many environment is to tailor the processes so that each party works with what is pertinent to them.

“As we looked to the leading solutions vendors, we found that no one has yet implemented a solution for a many-to-many Net market environment based on a collaborative commerce model, so we are spearheading some groundbreaking work,” said Chris Renner, co-founder and COO of INC2inc. “CSC’s combination of industry, functional and technical expertise has been essential to create an integrated solution that provides real value in our online marketplace. In addition, CSC has committed the full breadth of their resources to making this successful.”

The expanded relationship includes a CSC equity position in INC2inc as well as a broadened set of development initiatives, and a joint sales and marketing agreement. CSC is working actively with INC2inc to introduce the marketplace to existing CSC clients within the food manufacturing industry, and CSC also will provide resources to integrate other value-added services and expedite the adoption process among trading partners.

“Through our past and current work with INC2inc, we see a compelling opportunity for CSC to add significant value in helping to expand its marketplace functionality,” Hartman said.
