efoodmanager today launched its marketplace for the global food industry — www.efoodmanager.com.

With 900 companies already registered for the Open Market including retail groups, manufacturers and traders such as Deutsche See, LeShop, Furic Maree and Andretta — and 500 companies trading on existing Company Marketplaces — efoodmanager is further developing its position of leadership in the European food industry.

efoodmanager’s initial service will focus on the fruit & vegetable and seafood industries. Marketplaces for meat, meat convenience products, poultry, deli products and dairy products will be launched in the coming months.

Initially accessible in English and German, each marketplace will contain over 25,000 product categories.

efoodmanager plans to launch further marketplaces for beverages and food commodities such as grains and ingredients in the near future.

The efoodmanager site is divided into three main areas:

— the Open Market where buyers and sellers can trade openly amongst themselves

— individual Company Marketplaces — built by efoodmanager — where companies trade only with their own pre-selected parties using their own catalogues

— the Services area where buyers and sellers can take advantage of insurance, financial services, information, business directories, and logistic services provided by companies such as Danzas and Nagel Airfreight.

Jan Stenger, co-founder and Managing Director of efoodmanager, commented: “Our new online environment has created a marketplace for buyers and sellers that has not existed before. Not only can the international food industry be accessed cost effectively by European buyers, but process and product costs can be reduced by up to 25%. Our goal is to totally integrate value added services with the trading processes so as to deliver the best value for our customers.”

Buyer advantages of the electronic purchase of food produce over the efoodmanager platform include: quick and simple information retrieval, a rapid transaction process, access to a large pool of suppliers, price reductions resulting from greater price transparency, individual statistic tools such as sales reports, average prices and trend analyses — and a soon to be launched tracing and tracking service.

Advantages for selling food products over the efoodmanager marketplace include: access to a large buyer market with dramatically reduced customer acquisition costs, payment security, use of supplementary services, cost reduction for marketing and sales activities, speed of “time to market” and the ability to respond rapidly when there is volatile demand.

Targeting the procurement and trading needs of the wholesaler/trader, retailer, producers and food-service companies, efoodmanager is initially free to join. From the fourth quarter of 2000, efoodmanager will begin generating revenues by charging small transaction fees for every trade processed through the efoodmanager marketplaces. efoodmanager will also take service fees for building and hosting the individual Company Marketplaces.

The site will initially be available in English and German and will later extend to Spanish, French and Italian.

About efoodmanager

Founded in January 2000, efoodmanager AG seeks to become Europe’s premier B2B e-Commerce platform for the food industry. The company can trace its origins to Fruchtnetz GmbH, which in 1997 became Europe’s first B2B platform for fruits & vegetables servicing a number of major food players. The existing platform of Fruchtnetz.de will be fully integrated into the new efoodmanager platform after its upcoming launch in July 2000. This new marketplace will enable buyers and sellers to interact online and in real-time, irrespective of language or geography — empowering members to conduct business transactions easier than ever before.

efoodmanager currently employs 50 people from across the food, e-Commerce and management consultancy industries, and has offices in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, and in the USA.
