Excel Corporation, the Kansas-based meatpacking subsidiary of US agribusiness Cargill, is voluntarily recalling around 26,000 pounds of fresh ground beef products because of mislabelling, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has said.

The product package labels state that the ground beef has been irradiated for food safety, when in fact the beef has not been treated with irradiation.

The recall affects 1-pound packages of “Irradiated for food safety ground beef 93/7, Surebeam.” The packages carry various use or freeze by dates of 27 September to 15 December. Also included in the recall are 1-pound packages of “Irradiated for food safety ground beef 85/15, Surebeam.” The packages carry various use or freeze by dates of 3 October to 15 December.

The ground beef products were produced on various dates between 2 September and 20 November and were distributed to retail stores in Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin.

The problem was discovered by Excel, the FSIS said.
