The Washington DC-based Food Marketing Institute (FMI) has produced a manual for nutrition professionals and supermarkets to fight obesity.

“The obesity epidemic has been a call to action for the industry,” said FMI president Tim Hammonds. “Retailers and wholesalers are ideally positioned to address this public health issue, using professionals to develop strategies to promote health and drive growth.”

Listing skills needed by industry nutritionists, such as public speaking and community involvement, Supermarkets and Nutrition Professionals – A Strategic Alliance outlines in-store programs for solutions to health, including: Affordable Nutrition – inserting healthy recipes in ads for sale items and produce; Childhood Obesity – conducting tours for schoolchildren to identify healthy foods; and Clarifying Low-carb – navigating the diet maze through seminars and tours.
