Forest Park-based food wholesaler Terra Verde Farm picked up the second largest fine ever issued by the Georgia’s Department of Agriculture last week, for violating the state Food Act.

Agriculture Commissioner Tommy Irvin explained that the US$493,000 fine is the maximum permitted by law, and includes US$1,000 for each of the 388 contaminated food products at the company.


All but US$35,000 of the US$493,000 fine will be suspended however if Terra Verde owner, Franco Boeri, complies with the Department’s demands that he carry out monthly inspections for the next four years and provide food storage and handling training for employees.


“[The fine] was not our intention to force him out of business, but to bring him into compliance,” said Irvin.


Terra Verde will move to a new warehouse location as the original was closed down on Tuesday due to unsanitary conditions.
