Shrimp exporting countries fighting an anti-dumping claim launched against them by the US Southern Shrimp Alliance have ganged together in a charm offensive aimed at undermining support amongst Americans for the protection bid.
A joint statement has been issued by Brazil, China, Ecuador, India, Thailand and Vietnam, claiming that dumping-or-not, their farmed shrimp will always be cheaper than American wild shrimps. It says that any resulting anti-dumping duties would disrupt trade and would force American consumers to pay higher prices.
“US shrimp production cannot meet domestic demand and imported shrimp currently accounts for more than 80% of total consumption,” said the note.
