US-based fresh fruit and vegetable producer and marketer Fresh Del Monte Produce has said that it intends to vigorously defend itself against two antitrust lawsuits that seek class action status.

Fresh Del Monte said the complaints allege that the company monopolised or attempted to monopolise the sale of extra-sweet pineapples in violation of US antitrust law “by committing certain improper acts in connection with sales of its Del Monte Gold Extra Sweet pineapple in order to stifle competition”.

The lawsuits, each brought by a single wholesale purchaser, were filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, and in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

Fresh Del Monte said the allegations were “entirely without merit”.
