FreshLoc Technologies, Inc. today announced the availability of the FreshLoc food safety system. This patented, wireless, Internet- based data collection system automatically monitors and alerts grocery industry personnel to potentially dangerous temperature fluctuations and other environmental problems that can negatively affect their products and businesses. Rik Heller, FreshLoc’s chairman and CEO, noted that “now it is possible to monitor temperature and humidity environments for fresh food at every point along the cold food chain – from the farm to the grocery display case, and everywhere in between. While maintaining food at proper temperatures is not the only factor in preventing food-borne illness and bacterial growth, it is the largest controllable factor. We provide an inexpensive solution to the food safety problem.”
Advantages
Compared with other food environment monitoring systems, FreshLoc’s main advantages are:
- Completely wireless — allows flexibility to change facility
layout; - Low cost to purchase and operate;
- Automatic alerting: users can find out about potential
problems when they can still remedy them — instead of merely
after the fact; - More accurate records: should regulatory questions arise,
FreshLoc can instantly provide complete and precise records of
any or all monitored areas; - Labor savings: employees will no longer have to spend time
manually logging temperatures and maintaining those records; - Versatility: users can monitor information or print out
reports as frequently or infrequently as they desire; - Easy installation — quicker, cheaper and does not disrupt
store, warehouse or truck operations.
How it Works
FreshLoc provides wireless, digital sensors that can be placed in as many or few locations as necessary to ensure accurate data monitoring. Information collected by the sensors is uniquely identified and transmitted by radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to to readers (receivers) connected to the Internet. The sensors are small (about the size of two half-dollars stacked together) and are operated by batteries with a minimum 2-year life. The Internet connection provides the monitored information as frequently as management desires by telephone, fax, pager or e-mail.
In addition to monitoring temperature and humidity in stores, the FreshLoc system can also be used to monitor conditions in long- and short-haul delivery vehicles. Very soon, the system will also offer a “power sensor” which will be able to monitor electrical loads and thereby help users manage utility costs more efficiently.
