US snack food company Frito-Lay has announced it is to launch low-carb versions of some its tortilla chip brands.

Frito-Lay, which last year eliminated trans fats from its core brands, said that beginning this spring, it will launch a new line extension of Doritos and Tostitos that will have less than half the carbohydrates of its popular tortilla chip brands.

The new products, named Doritos Edge and Tostitos Edge, will have a total of six net carbohydrates, ten grams of protein, and three grams of fibre. Doritos Edge is now in test market in Phoenix, Arizona. Doritos Edge and Tostitos Edge will be available in stores across the country in May.

The company, which is a division of soft drinks giant PepsiCo, said it will use soy proteins and fibre to convert to a lower carbohydrate chip, resulting in a 60% reduction of carbohydrates in both products.
