Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate Company introduced a new generation of chocolate — “functional chocolates” designed to use the natural health qualities and neurochemicals of the cocoa bean to enhance the consumer’s pleasure of eating chocolate. Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate is introducing a line of functional chocolates that contain more of the natural and healthy elements of the cocoa tree.
“We are heartened by the recent scientific studies that demonstrate the functional and health related qualities of chocolate. Studies at the University of Scranton have shown chocolate to be a more effective anti-oxidant, molecule for molecule, than Vitamin C or E. Pennsylvania State University has shown that chocolate raises the ‘good-cholesterol’ HDL while lowering the bad cholesterol LDL. Add to these beneficial qualities selected chocolate chemicals that effect mood or behavior and you create ‘functional chocolate,”‘ states James Walsh, President of Hawaiian Vintage Chocolate. “We introduced the first of these chocolates, the ‘Love Truffle’ on Valentine’s Day. With its Essence of Cacao® which includes extra PEA (a precursor to improved mood from increased endorphin production), Theobroma, and a boaster of botanicals like Damiana and Ginseng the Love Truffle produced a genuine lover’s ‘high.”‘

The current annual retail sales of the chocolate and confectionery market in the United States is 25 billion dollars. The National Confectioners Association predicts that the addition of the functional foods category could drive the entire food and drink market up by 17.6 billion dollars annually.
