The Council on Economic Priorities (CEP) bestowed its Corporate Conscience Award for Environmental Stewardship on Horizon Organic Holding Corp. at a ceremony in New York City on June 15, 2000. The Environmental Stewardship Award is presented annually to companies that have demonstrated a company mission of sustainability; integration of environmental, health and safety principles into core business strategy; corporate environmental reporting; product stewardship; responsible resource use; and/or accountability for environmental performance.

Master of ceremonies for the CEP awards program was Lynn Sheer, an ABC television news commentator whose investigative stories frequently focus on corporate issues. “Horizon Organic is not only the country’s single national milk brand but also is the unequivocal frontrunner in environmentally responsible dairy farming,” she noted as she presented the award for Environmental Stewardship to Chuck Marcy, president and chief executive officer of Horizon Organic.

Accepting the award on behalf of Horizon Organic, the nation’s leading organic dairy, Marcy noted that his rapidly growing company’s recent acquisitions of organic dairy companies in the United Kingdom have resulted in a substantial increase in company-supported organic acreage. “We believe that with our latest acquisitions in Europe, Horizon Organic operations help support nearly 200,000 acres in organic production … We’re changing the world, one organic acre at a time.”

The CEP also cited Horizon Organic for its concern over the care and treatment of its dairy cows, which are never given antibiotics or growth hormones to artificially stimulate milk production. Marcy commented on his company’s continued focus concerning animal welfare and the benefits of environmental stewardship. “Whether it’s purchasing organic sugar from a farmers’ cooperative in Paraguay or organic eggs from a woman’s small farm in Virginia, the Happy Cow(TM) company symbolizes a popular trend that’s growing because of increased consumer demand for better animal care, safer food and a healthier environment — now and for generations to come.”

A distinguished panel of 19 independent judges selected Horizon Organic, along with five other companies, for their commitment to community relations, employee empowerment, environmental protection, diversity and global ethics. Other winners of the 14th Annual Corporate Conscience Awards were Bristol-Myers Squibb (Global Ethics Award), Carris Reels (Employee Empowerment Award), Denny’s, a subsidiary of Advantica Restaurant Group, Inc., (Diversity Award), Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings, Inc. (Environmental Stewardship Award), and Ricoh Corporation (Environmental Stewardship Award).

For 31 years, the Council on Economic Priorities (CEP), an independent non-profit organization, has been dedicated to promoting incentives for social and environmental performance. The Corporate Conscience Awards were established in 1987 to illustrate the developing leadership role of companies in shaping social and environmental policies.
