Just six months after Texan sugar giant Imperial Sugar closed its Sugar Land refining operation, the group has announced its neighbouring distribution and packaging facility will follow suit.

Some 130 employees will be made redundant as the operation shuts down, following in the footsteps of the 325 co-workers who lost their job when the refining plant shuttered.

In December, Imperial Sugar, which is the oldest continuously operating business in the Houston area, said it would halt the refining of sugar but would continue to package and distribute at the site and would keep its corporate offices in Sugar Land. Its headquarters is still in the city.

Workers were notified yesterday [Thursday] that the last official day of business would be Tuesday.
