Kemin Americas, Inc., yesterday introduced a new organic acid-based, pre-harvest food-safety program to address critical pathogen concerns of the U.S. poultry industry. Named the K-One(TM) brand program, this integrated approach considers sanitation, good housekeeping, maintenance at the feed mill and farm, strict biosecurity, pest control, and the treatment of water, feed and litter for maximum impact.

“We are responding to our customers’ demands for new approaches in their poultry live production to address consumer concern about food safety,” said Dr. John Greaves, president of Kemin Americas, during the opening of the 2001 International Poultry Congress here today. “This first-of-its-kind, comprehensive program is targeted at the poultry industry, from the moment the birds are placed onto litter until they are processed.”

The K-One(TM) program provides an over-arching management strategy to provide food safety in a live operation. “What we’re developing is a series of management practices that provide tools — assurance programs along with a portfolio of products — that fit within that strategy,” said Dr. Gregory Aldrich, Kemin Americas, Inc., research director. “It begins with an audit of current Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) practices, feed and application equipment capabilities, and products being used. This allows Kemin to customize a program for each operation.”

The K-One(TM) initially addresses the issues of water acidification, feed hygiene, pH reduction and ammonia control in litter as Kemin Americas’ introductory offering to respond to impending farm-level HACCP requirements. But, for maximum effectiveness, the program also involves ongoing laboratory services and technical service support to assure the whole program is fine-tuned.

“No one element can provide a silver bullet to pathogen reduction,” said Greaves when describing the program. “That’s why the new Kemin, with its concentration on the entire agri-food, is the One(TM) company introducing a comprehensive program of this importance to the poultry industry.”

Kemin Industries uses innovative science to produce nutritional solutions for a changing world. Kemin Products are used in human food and vitamins, pet food diets, and animal feeds. The company has more than 800 employees around the world.
