Officials from Northfield-based Kraft Foods have revealed that the branded food giant is exempt from paying its share of the US$9m StarLink settlement deal decided in a US court last week.

Federal District Judge James Moran ruled last Thursday that Kraft, and others, should together spend US$6m on vouchers to compensate consumers for the fact that the GM corn, which was unapproved for human consumption, had contaminated millions of US food products.

A spokeswoman explained however that Aventis CropScience USA Holding Inc, the North Carolina-based company that helped develop StarLink, would be paying all of the costs associated with Kraft’s involvement.

Kraft recalled all Taco Bell Home Originals taco shell products in September 2000 because they contained StarLink corn.
