US grocer Kroger will close its store at Virginia Beach, Pembroke.
Kroger said the location of the store, which it acquired via its purchase of the region’s Hannaford Bros. stores in 2000, has hampered sales growth. The 46,000 sq ft store suffered a lack of visibility and difficult access to parking.
“It’s in a very attractive area for general retail development,” said Archie Fralin, public relations manager for Kroger’s mid-Atlantic region, “but that location just wasn’t very conducive for traffic in and out from neighbouring communities […] and just never achieved the sales volume we had anticipated for it.”
Kroger will offer the 23 employees affected by the closure jobs at its nine other stores in the Hampton Roads area.
