The Australian media has reported concerns over US proposals to introduce mandatory labelling of country of origin on meat, fruit and vegetables.

The move could come as part of the new Farm Bill, and ABC Rural News reported that a House vote in Washington indicated new support for mandatory-only labelling.

Motion co-sponsor John Thoon is reported by ABC as saying: “Any meat or meat product imported in the US must be labelled to indicate country of origin. Additionally, any meat product produced in the US that contains any meat or meat product, the origin of which is not in the US, must also be labelled to indicate country of origin.”

This would help US farmers and processors to encourage shoppers to buy local produce. Australian government and meat industry representatives fear the impact could be serious. A serious downside would be that Australian beef ground up with beef from other countries would lose its identity and simply be labelled ‘imported’.
