Media Revolution, a leading Web design firm located in Santa Monica, Calif., designed the website for electricfood.com (www.electricfood.com), a unique specialty food site that features hundreds of specialty foods, recipes, cooking tips and insights from professional chefs. The new e-commerce site launched June 27, 2000.
Electricfood.com, “Between Everyday and Gourmet”, is a subsidiary of Hy-Vee Supermarkets, one of the largest employee-owned retail corporations in the upper Midwest. Hy-Vee and electricfood aimed to build an online presence as the first and only specialty food site to combine a brick-and-mortar supermarket chain with the choice, content and convenience found online.
Electricfood chose award winning Media Revolution (www.mediarevolution.com) to design the interface and navigational system for their nearly 1,000 specialty food items.
“Media Revolution designed electricfood to be as easy to use as a stroll through an enticing specialty food store,” said Jason Yim, President and Creative Director of Media Revolution. “The site’s interface focuses on presenting the gourmet products in an easily accessible and appealing manner. Simultaneously, the original content supports the transaction by supplying additional ideas and is designed to keep customers coming back frequently so they can view the latest recipes which highlight electricfood products.”
Media Revolution’s goal was to design electricfood with both creativity and functionality.
The homepage was built as an easily identifiable storefront complete with food selections using an aisle/category metaphor, shopping cart, instant product pricing and special feature product selections such as gourmet meal packs, bestsellers, and featured brands. The storefront also leads to a community-oriented portion of electricfood that showcases original articles (via an agreement with TV Guide’s Celebrity Dish), cooking tips & techniques, and a cooking glossary. The community area also features a “Ready Recipe Shop”, a database of hundreds of recipes, many of which have ingredients that can be found on electricfood.

Whether navigating to specific food areas, or pulling ingredient products from a recipe, or simply searching for a particular branded product, the customer is one simple click from dropping those products into their shopping cart and completing their purchase.
