Mrs. Smith’s Bakeries has revealed that it is voluntarily recalling its 3.5-ounce packages of Mrs. Freshley’s, BlueBird, Aunt Hannah, and Blue Ribbon carrot cake because they may contain undeclared whey, a dairy product.

People who have allergies to dairy products run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The recalled snack carrot cakes were distributed nationwide in retail stores and through vending machines. The product comes in a 3.5-ounce, clear plastic package marked with “best if used by” date of 4 August or earlier.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem. The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the whey-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of whey. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and product change processes.

The problem has been corrected and production of the product has resumed.
