New rules have been issued that require fresh and frozen fish sold in the US to be labelled as to whether they were farm-raised or wild.


Under the new regulations, which will enter into force in April next year, the country of origin of the product will also have to be labelled, reported the Associated Press.


Retailers and processors have until April to comply with the new rules – a wait designed to allow the industry to sell its existing unlabelled stock. Strict enforcement of the rules will not happen until a year from now, officials said.


The rule applies to fresh and frozen fish sold in supermarkets and large retail outlets, but not that sold in foodservice outlets.
