The Grocery Manufacturers of America applauds a new study published this week by the New England Journal of Medicine which confirms that with a few simple, common-sense dietary changes, consumers can help reduce their blood pressure.

“This study is good news for people concerned with high blood pressure,” said Dr. Sue Ferenc, GMA Vice President, Science and Regulatory Policy.  “By adding more fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy to their diet, consumers can significantly reduce their blood pressure.  In addition, a diet high in these foods can increase the intake of fiber, calcium, and antioxidants, while lowering total fat intake.”

The new DASH-Sodium study differs from previous DASH-diet studies in that it controls sodium intake in the study diet.

“As has been shown in the previous DASH-diet studies, many of the currently available processed foods can easily be added to a diet to help lower blood pressure,” noted Ferenc.

“One thing shouldn’t be lost in the debate on sodium in the diet is that salt is an important part of a healthy diet.  As noted expert Dr. David Kritchevsky, a nutrition scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, has often said: ‘the key to a good diet is common sense–moderation, not martyrdom,'” observed Ferenc.
