US regional grocer Pathmark stores has reported a fall in quarterly earnings as it struggled to cut costs.

Pathmark, which operates more than 100 supermarkets mainly in the New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia areas, reported earnings for its fiscal first quarter to 3 May were $0.9m, compared to $2.1m in the year-ago period.

The retailer’s quarterly sales increased 2.9% to $1.0bn, while same-store sales rose 1.9%.
