PCC has partnered with EcoFish, Inc. a national seafood wholesaler whose Independent Seafood Advisory Board identifies environmentally responsible fisheries and aquatic farms, to bring its customers seafood that is environmentally responsible, competitively priced and in many cases locally caught or farmed. This partnership makes PCC the largest retailer of environmentally responsible seafood in the Puget Sound region.

Tracy Wolpert, PCC CEO, explained: “Being the largest retailer of environmentally responsible seafood is a natural step for PCC. We partnered with EcoFish because of their expertise in identifying the sources of their seafood as environmentally responsible and their dedication to restoring healthy marine habitats. EcoFish is a company whose values align with PCC and those of our customers.”

EcoFish’s Advisory Board uses a series of selection guidelines to identify environmentally responsible seafood. Criteria include: minimizing by-catch, population of species, location of harvest, harvest method and plan for future management of the fishery or aquatic farm. Once the fishery or aquatic farm is identified EcoFish recommends its product to PCC’s seafood buyer.

Henry Lovejoy, EcoFish Founder and CEO commented: “Some of the best environmentally responsible seafood is found right here in the Pacific Northwest.

“We are confident that the partnership with PCC will meet customer demand for environmentally responsible seafood harvesting and promote the importance of feeding your family with products that are fresh, healthy and sustainable.”

At PCC locations shoppers will notice the EcoFish/PCC label on most lines of seafood, identifying them as environmentally responsible. Many of the types of environmentally responsible seafood are caught or raised locally, and while availability will be dictated by the season, PCC will carry a wide variety of seafood including trap caught Oregon Dungeness Crab, trap caught Alaska Prawns, Puget Sound Manila Clams, troll caught Wild Alaska Salmon, troll caught Hawaiian Albacore, farmed Trout and suspension cultured Pacific Oysters.

Wolpert concluded: “As fish stocks worldwide continue to be depleted we hope that our competitors will consider taking the same steps PCC has in working to ensure that seafood sold in grocery stores is environmentally responsible.

“We look forward to a time when all seafood sold in grocery stores will be environmentally responsible.”
