US regional supermarket operator Penn Traffic has announced it is to cut 125 administrative and supervisory jobs, of which 25 are currently vacant positions.

The Syracuse, New York-based retailer filed for bankruptcy at the end of May this year following a decline in its operating performance. The company had been struggling amid a weak economy and fierce competition from discount retailers such as US retail giant Wal-Mart.

Penn Traffic operates 211 supermarkets in New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont and West Virginia under the Big Bear, Big Bear Plus, BiLo, P&C and Quality banners. The company also operates a wholesale food distribution business.
